Problems of solid mechanics involving contact between bodies are found in a broad field of applications. The possibility of contact may be viewed as a mechanical constraint. Physically, bodies cannot occupy the same spatial location, that is, penetration is not allowed. Computational models that handle such scenarios have to consider contact contributions terms, taking place when the contact mechanical constraint is active. In engineering there are countless examples that employ the so-called computational contact modeling, such as wheel-rail contact for railway engineering, crash studies for automotive and aeronautic industry, pipeline-seabed interaction study for the offshore industry, just to name some.
In this lecture, the master-master contact description will be presented. It may be seen as a pointwise contact formulation. Particularly, attention will be given to the local contact problem, which consists on determining the minimum distance or maximum penetration experienced by interacting surfaces. A three-phase optimization algorithm is addressed for the solution. Moreover, a proposal for the construction of a family of pointwise contact models within a single framework is done. For that, the concept of degeneration of master-master contact formulation between two surfaces is introduced.
The lecture will cover an overview of master-master contact formulation and ongoing engineering applications in the context of wheel-rail contact interaction.
